22 April - Field (art) Reflection

I had an amazing time during my 3 week field experience in the 4th grade at Ridgeline Elementary. My field partner was Jessica Rose. We worked very well together. Prior to beginning our 3 weeks we had the opportunity to play get to know you games with the 4th grade students and meet our cooperating teacher, Mrs. Patti Ratliff. We did this activity the first day in art class. We sat in a circle and stated our name, an emotion, and a gesture with our hands. It took a lot longer with 4th graders than college students, but did help us learn their names!

From the first time I entered Ridgeline I was astounded by the cleanliness, friendliness and the feel of learning taking place in the atmosphere. When we entered the classroom Mrs. Ratliff put us to work right away. Her interest was for us to interact with the students as much as possible. We observed her teaching math, language arts, and science. Jessica and I would take turns reading The Candy Shoppe Wars after lunch each day. Mrs. Ratliff supplied the special reading hat, such a cute idea I’ll be implementing in my classroom.

I enjoyed my time spent in the 4th grade with Patti Ratliff. It is no secret that she loves to teach. She was a great example to me in how to teach with enthusiasm, making it fun with songs (she had many on math, Utah, rock cycle, classical, upbeat), and building students up constantly. We loved it so much we often stayed more than our required time.

The lessons we taught were on supply and demand, producers and consumers, and about Utah’s economy. We made them fun, engaging, the students listened, participated, and stayed in control most of the time! The lesson we had our career interviews in was cut short so they only had about 5 minutes. It would have been better if I'd printed interview questions to ask instead of writing them on the board. Our lesson with visual art was successful although it was quite noisy. It was the Friday before Spring Break and the kids were quite distracted. We should've explained our expectations on the noise level. Most of the students did their best on their brochures, with a few that didn't try stating they weren't good at art.

I can understand how teachers get attached to their students. You want them to do great, you want them to succeed, and you want the best for every aspect of their lives. In the short 3 weeks we were there, I experienced these feelings toward the students. After being in the school atmosphere and experiencing teaching, I know I was meant to be a teacher. There is nothing I desire more in life than to make a positive difference in children. I am excited to gain more knowledge and master techniques to become the best teacher I can be.

20 April - Lessons Learned

I am amazed at how far technology has advanced since I was in highschool (14 years ago). We didn't even have access to the internet. The computer class that I took at Provo High was as basic as they come, teaching us how to type and use a basic software programs. When my younger brother introduced me to the World Wide Web I thought I would never, ever use it. Boy was I wrong. You can only hide from the technology world for so long, it will come looking for you if you don't come looking for it!

I enjoyed all of the sites and videos. I even saved a few of them to my "favorites" tab. The eschool news was informational and will be a site I frequently visit. The one that struck me most by surprise was the globalization; did you know, you tube video. I find some of the facts hard to believe. It seems crazy that the top 10 jobs in 2010 didn't exist in 2004. I am curious to know what jobs those are. Also, the fact that we are preparing students for jobs that don't exist with technology that isn't invented. I believe some of the jobs don't exist but we are still going to have a need of scientists, doctors, nurses, factory/store workers, teachers, etc.

The most important 2 things that I learned from these sources are that: (1) I will have to be open to change and (2) I must embrace technology and make it my best friend. I have many things to still learn. I know I must use the best tools that will engage my students. I can do this by incorporating technology into my lesson plans.

20 April - My Beliefs

Using technology in the classroom is mandatory. Teachers that fail to do so are failing their students. This is a technology generation. There are more visual learners than ever. You can incorporate technology by interactive games, webquests, online field trips, etc. There are no excuses why teachers aren't using technology. We expect our students to learn, therefore, we as teachers need to be the example and learn how to integrate technology in our lessons, assesssments, professional development, etc.

By using technology in the classroom you are doing yourself, as the teacher, a favor. Students will be easier to manage when they are tuned in to a technology rich lesson, whether it is a digital story, power point, podcast, vidcast, etc. Why not let them have hands on experience? Let them create their own power point, vidcast, podcast, whatever. Give them the opportunity to shine academically using technology. Students that don't normally perform as well as the rest of the class, may be the student that rises above everyone with their technology rich assignment.

It is our jobs to prepare children for the future. Embrace the learning that will occur naturally from technology. Use technology as a motivating tool to help you increase student's test scores! It is our responsibility.

20 April - Strengths and Weaknesses

Although I've had to get out of my comfort zone, one strength with technology is that I enjoy learning new things. I can operate a computer and it's software, send emails, open and save programs, create a google site, digital story, upload and download files, and create power points.

I am clearly not an expert on anything so I can improve in every aspect of the NET standards and UNI survey. I am weak in incorporating technology in my lesson plans, as well as using technology as an assessment tool. My other weakness is troubleshooting. Eeeks. When something goes wrong with a program, I immediately need an anxiety pill. No, not really, but it does cause me stress. Usually it is something very minimal and then I am A-OK!

I would like to attend a technology conference this summer. I could also take online classes on specific software programs. (I've been meaning to ask you what conference you would recommend.) As far as online tutorials, I really like Kathy Schrock's website. on She has useful ways of incorporating technology into your lesson plans. By attending technology workshops and learning effective ways of implementing technology into teaching and assessing my students, I can improve my weaknesses. In turn, I'll also raise my teacher self-efficacy, being more confident and prepared to teach children.

10 March- Digital Story 3

You wouldn't believe how many pictures I had to take to get one semi-good one! 2 little tinies aren't very excited to sit still when they could be running around, terrorizing the house, and drawing on the walls. These girls are a hoot to have around for sure. Ashlyn on left, Brielle on right! Love my little goobers.

Sooo, exciting news! Jessica and I finally know what we are doing for our Digital Story. We are meeting tomorrow during "work study time" to start it. So exciting I know. I will post a link when we are finished, but until then just get pumped up.

I don't even think a blog post due is today. Just doing one in case I am wrong, and because I am an over achiever! Adios.

3 March - Digital Story 2

Ridgeline Raccoons are amazing Readers!
I am so excited to do my Student Teaching in Highland at Ridgeline Elementary. Jessica, my field partner, and I went to the school this morning and met the students. We played a get to know you game that we learned in Art class. We also read a pirate book since I was already dressed as a pirate for Read across America day at Lehi Elementary. The students are energetic, smart, and sponges for new information. I hope we can live up to their standards and deliver worthy, memorable lesson plans. We are in the 4th grade and focusing on Social Studies. I can already tell the 3 weeks are going to fly on by.
I mentioned we are teaching Social Studies. Jessica and I will create 5 lesson plans to teach, one of them being a Digital Story. I wish I knew the subject we were doing because I am more than ready to get started.
In the meantime, I am currently learning about copyright acts and fair use laws. This will help me when I use images from the internet to put on my digital story. You can tell if an image is copyrighted if it has: a copyright symbol at the bottom of the picture, a watermark over the image, or if it states the publishers name with the year, it is NOT okay to use. However, if none of the above apply, you should be safe. You for sure know it is safe to use if there is a link to download it. If ever in doubt, you can contact the person or company to see if it is okay to use their image.
Which brings me to another point. Did you know it is illegal to lend a DVD to a friend or family member? It is true. When you purchase a DVD you are agreeing that it is for your own personal use. Which also means, it is illegal to show a movie that I have purchased for my family in my classroom. If you break the law, you can be fined up to $250,000.
It seems that the copyright laws just can't keep up with technology. You would think that internet users would be honest and live by the golden rule. It is breaking the law when you download free music and access dishonest sites. This is not helping anyone. Not only could you serve jail time and be charged with hefty fines, but think of the artist you are ripping off. Would you want someone to rip off your work? No. If you like an artist enough to want to download his/her music you should be willing to pay a minimal fee. The same goes for software. If it is a program you'll use that will help your business, save you time, and benefit you, why not support the programmer that made it available to you in the first place?
I guess I'll get off my soapbox now. Stampin Angie here, signing off!

24 February~ Digital Story 1

Happy 34th Birthday to my Jared. He totally completes me. Love this man.

Digital Story- The next 6 weeks I will be working on a digital story. I am still unsure of my topic although I have many ideas. I want to make sure it will be something I can use while teaching in 4th grade for my field experience.

In class we watched many deep digital stories. I was fighting back tears in most of them. The Holocaust one was so emotional. It made me feel connected, as if I was there. The pictures with the music was very powering.

A digital story would be a great way to introduce a subject. It sparks interest so you'd want to know more. It would also be a fun way for students to navigate and be creative with any subject.

When designing a digital story you must:

  • Decide your content area
  • Design a general script
  • Gather music
  • Embrace revision
  • Sequence the story so it flows

17 February - Vidcast Reflection

Lydia and I laughed at this picture I took of Ethan and Bolt. Ethan loves his "pal" Bolt. He loves him so much that he wants him to sleep in his bed. Bolt is too chicken to sleep in Ethan's bed so Ethan brought up his pillow and blanket and snuggled Bolt in the front room. He's a little snuggle bug.

10 February- Vidcasts

Awe. A quiet moment hanging out with their dog. To say the babies LOVE their bottles would be a huge understatement. I just love how they play and pitter patter around the house together. So cute.

WHAT? Vidcasts. We learned how to do a few different types of videos and post them on the internet. You can do videos of you talking, singing, dancing, whatever your heart desires. You can also create one using pictures, music, and fun effects. You will be able to view mine next week. Get excited.

SO WHAT? You can use vidcasts for a variety of things.

  1. You could do a HOW TO video where you give oral instructions while doing it. For example; hair, cooking, clean something, the possibilities are endless.
  2. You could do a Tutorial on something, step by step instructions on a specific subject. Examples: Tutorial on uploading your pictures, downloading software, etc.
  3. Introduction to new content in any subject.
  4. PSA-Public Service Announcement on any safety concerns or helpful information for students.
NOW WHAT? Wouldn't it be fun to make a classroom video on a science project? It would be so engaging to do a vidcast on the Solar System. Everyone could participate. You could assign every student a topic that they are in charge of. You could even do Social Studies and Language Arts. I love to take a topic that kids don't think is going to be very fun and turn it into the best thing ever that they'll remember FOREVER! Another idea, not school related, would be to make a vidcast of pictures for a loved one with your voice. A grandma, spouse, or friend would love a vidcast as a thoughtful gift.

3 February~ Podcasts

My little Lydi Bug just hours old just celebrated her 5th birthday on Friday. Love this princess.

What? PODCASTS! They are so fun. I have never had so much fun writing up a Public Service Announcement with Natalia. We planned what we would each say and then recording it on an iphone. I don't think I've ever had so much fun or laughed so hard while doing an assignment.

So What? You can use Podcasts for a variety of things. I am going to focus on the educational benefits. In my psychology class our teacher allows us to turn in our assignments using a podcast. Now that I know how to do it, I can record my homework terms and upload them. It would be beneficial to me for studying and reviewing the content in my ipod while I excersise, clean, and cook. So convenient. Now all I need is a way to record my podcasts.

Now What? I can also podcast a lecture that I am giving, take for instance math. If a student misses a day of school or just needs a review he/she can download the lecture and be able to understand the material better. If I knew I was being recorded I would be more attentive to not only writing the problems out but also speaking them to the ones that listen to it later. It would also be a good review to do a podcast on some likely questions/concepts that would be on the upcoming test. This would help students prepare better and lessen test anxiety. It would also be fun for older age students to record their own podcast for an assignment, individually or as a group. I am excited to do some podcasting with my kids and my future students. Watch out. We might get a little CrAzY!!

27 January 2011~Google Part 2

Had to add a picture of 2 of my kiddos, Lydia and Ethan. They are such good friends, I love it. In my opinion, a blog post isn't a real blog post unless it has some sort of picture!

What? I created my own website on google sites. It was so easy as long as you have Doc Waters there to guide you. Ha ha. No really. It was a "wizzy wig" tool. Very self explanatory. I could do it again if I need to. Go to it HERE and make sure you take my New Year Quiz in the Survey/Test/Quiz link.

So What? I can use this tool/website now for my field experience. I can use the calendar for real lessons and the daily agenda. I can also have friends and family test out my quiz and the whole website to get their feedback. I think it is a great way to keep the students, as well as the parents informed on what is going on at school.

Now What? Well, I am definitely going to have to play with the site more so I feel 100% comfortable, 6 hours just wasn't enough for this girl! I will definitely use this when I am officially "Mrs. Adams" to 25-30 cute little munchkins. I want to be the most effective teacher I can be. I can do this by integrating technology not only in the classroom, but using it as a means of communication for the busy parents and students. I also think it would be a good idea to let the principal know of my site so she/he can monitor it and provide feedback as well.

20 January ~ Google Part 1

WHAT? Google of course. In class I learned how to make a Google document, calendar, form, even a presentation. Needless to say, I am hooked. I will use all of these things at home, at school, and in my classroom. How you ask? Let me tell you.

SO WHAT? I can access this information anywhere there is internet access. I won't have to be at home (where my calendar is located) to make plans anymore. I can work on group projects/presentations with my fellow peers. When doing a powerpoint we can work together on it any time of the day. One of the coolest features is that you can change it to any language you want. I know, so cool.

NOW WHAT? I will be able to engage my future students by collaberating on an assignment. I can send a questionaire to parents to see if and when they could volunteer in the classroom. I can make a weekly newsletter for my students in English and with the click of a button transform it into their language preference. I can make a spreadsheet with grades, notes, the possibilities are endless! I can be organized 24-7. So exciting! These tools are going to change the way we teach, learn, and engage. I am excited to do some more exploring!

13 January - Introduction... Special Topics Blog

Meet my family... My husband Jared, my son Ethan (7 1/2), Lydia (almost 5)
Jared holding Brielle (19 mo.) and Ashlyn (19 mo.)

I haven't blogged in months so it was quite fun creating a new blog for my EDEL 3250 class. I am most excited about busting out my "SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY!" If you don't know what that is, just ask me next time we talk!

I have a lot of hobbies. My 2 favorites are baking and scrapbooking. I will pretty much try anything once. Other things I enjoy are: hiking, biking, working out, hanging out w/friends and family, camping, boating/wakeboarding, reading, and last but not least, playing with the kiddos. My 4 favorite vacation spots are Bear Lake, Star Valley, Cabo San Lucas MX, and Lake Powell. I like a variety of music but my 2 favorite bands are Green Day and Dave Matthews Band.

I have some weaknesses that I am always trying to do better on. I try and do everything and please everyone, it could be considered a strength but my husband begs to differ! I will give up my sleep to get projects done, then I am impatient and grouchy to be around! I am a total pack rat although I hate clutter. On that note, let's focus on my strengths! I am a firm believer that attitude is everything. I love people. I am caring, kind, and always strive to do my best. I make my bed, 2 cribs, and 2 kids' beds daily. I keep a pretty clean house, thanks to my husband and kids who are always happy to help. I am crafty and funny. If you would like to know
